Where To Be High in The Bay

The Bay Area is a beautiful place — and we love getting high in beautiful places! Wherever you end up on your smoky excursions, just remember that public consumption is still illegal in the state of California, and it's not cool to drive high, so be responsible!

Around The Bay

At a Park

Sometimes there’s nothing better than just laying on the grass while stoned with your pals. We’re partial to the shores of Lake Merritt, Hellman Hollow in Golden Gate Park, and the picturesque Alamo Square. Lafayette Park is another favorite thanks to the swings, chill vibes, and killer views. The absolute best views are atop Twin Peaks (or the less crowded Tank Hill) if you have a sober pal to get you up there.

The Beach

Get ~wavy~ and soak up the sun (if Karl the Fog isn't around) while high on Baker Beach and Ocean Beach in SF. East Bay folks: we recommend the not-too-crowded Crown Memorial State Beach and Alameda Beach. Perhaps the shores of Half Moon Bay go without saying, but we'll mention it anyway.

At a Comedy Show

Live comedy and weed. Need we say more?  Y'all already know the drill. You can catch comedy shows at The Punch Line San Francisco, The Setup, Cobb's Comedy Club, Endgames Improv, and more. If the weather is nice, you can also catch comedy events, shows, and markets outdoors!

Any Pizza Joint ... Anywhere

Pizza! The munchies! Some things just go together. Our favorite stoned joints include Golden Boy  and Tony's in North Beach, any Seniore's location, Amazona's Pizza in Uptown Oakland, and Stuft Pizza in Milpitas. See all of our favorite pizza spots in our guide to The Bay's Best Pizza.

San Francisco

Dolores Park

If you know, you know. And if you don't, well then, you're missing out.

Via 420 Hippie Hill

[Canceled] — Hippie Hill

The city-sanctioned Hippie Hill event was canceled last year due to citywide budget cuts, lack of financial sponsorship, and other reasons—and unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be returning this year. Then again, the city-sponsored event is relatively new — and the yearly gathering in Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park has been going down without fail nearly every year, with or without city approval. Just be aware that you won't find official programming, live performances, and the like this 420 weekend. Hopefully it will return next year!

Via California Academy of Sciences

The Aquarium at Cal Academy

Just for the record, Claude (the albino alligator) has a total stoner personality. He lays on a heated rock all day and doesn't seem to give a damn about all the fish who share his tank. Plus, the Academy of Sciences has an amazing aquarium. The tunnel of tropical fish in the basement (that becomes extra psychedelic after a few puffs, might we add) really takes the cake.

Pier 14

An underrated gem located at the southern end of the Embarcadero, Pier 14 serves no purpose other than to provide amazing views of the Bay and San Francisco skyline. Venture to the end, park it on one of the chairs and take in the Bay Bridge as the sun goes down. It’s a vibe.

Via Conservatory of Flowers

Conservatory of Flowers

Sometimes the best place to be high is among the plants you can't smoke. All you need is a little bud to help you literally slow down and smell the roses. Admission is free for San Francisco residents!

Via Per La Mente

Audium

When Audium opened in the mid-1960s, it was nothing short of revolutionary. Now the sound theater  in which works are sculpted around listeners through 176 speakers  is a San Francisco staple and a bona fide mind trip no matter how stoned or sober you are. They have shows Thursday through Saturday most weeks!

East Bay

Everything we just said about The Conservatory of Flowers applies to The Gardens at Lake Merritt and the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden  only East Bay folks don't have to cross the bridge for either. The Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt is particularly serene.

Indian Rock Park

The view from the top is killer (and we promise it's not too much work on your way up). Whether you head there during the day or night, you'll be able to catch the most amazing panoramic view of the Bay. Crush a bit, roll a bit, take a hit ... you know the rest.

Mount Diablo

This one's probably best after some sativa because if you've been to Mount Diablo, you know getting up there isn't exactly a lazy-daisy walk in the park. But pretty beautiful, eh? There's tons of bright wildflowers blooming in the spring.

South Bay + Peninsula

At the Drive-In

BYOM (munchies) and enjoy the glory that is going out and doing something fun, minus having to get dressed, get out of the car, etc. And best of all, West Wind Capitol Drive-In has plenty of movies showing on 4/20, making for a low-key celebration. Just be sure to bring a DD!

Via Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve

Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve

If a leisurely hilltop walk with insane valley views sounds up your alley, you need to check out the Aquila Loop Trail at Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve. It’s an easy one mile loop that’s great sober, and even better with a bit of weed. Pause for a lengthy break on a bench, and marvel at all you can see sprawling around.

Via The Tech Interactive

The Tech Interactive

Sure, The Tech Interactive might remind you of an elementary school field trip, but it’s a great place to geek out and take a trip of a different variety. Plus, they have a huge IMAX theater where you can become fully immersed in a nature doc or the occasional movie.

North Bay

Via Mt. Tamalpais State Park

Mt. Tam Fire Lookout

This is California, so you can bet we like to go hiking while high. (High-king?) The trails of Mt. Tamalpais in North Bay are especially appealing and gorgeous post-toke, and it’s only one-third of a mile to the fire lookout. Bring GORP for the munchies and don't get too high to focus, as the trail gets a little rocky towards the top.

Via The Sonoma County Experience

Wine and Weed Tours

What goes better together than weed and wine, especially in Sonoma County? If you’re interested in learning about how and where your bud is cultivated, it’s an experience that’s hard to beat. Enjoy being bussed from here to there, tasting wine, and visiting farms, labs, and dispensaries depending on which tour you choose.

Via Parks Conservancy

Hawk Hill

You’ll catch sweeping views of the Golden Gate from Hawk Hill, and if you’re lucky you might see some of the birds that the area is named for. Find a sunny spot, kick back, and take your time taking it all in. If you’re in an exploratory mood, check out Battery 129, a historic WWII military installation.
