Why just have breakfast when you can have it in sandwich form instead? There’s no better way to start the day than a breakfast sammy paired with a coffee, a good hike, and/or a food coma. We’ve spent many mornings doing just that, so here’s a few of our favorite breakfast sandwiches in the Bay.

San Francisco
Via Devil's Teeth
(Outer Sunset // Richmond // Financial District)
The hype is real. There’s only one way to order the iconic Devil’s Teeth breakfast sandwich, and that’s the “special” way — you’ll get scrambled eggs, pepperjack, bacon, avocado, and the nectar of the gods (AKA lemon garlic aioli) between two flaky buttermilk biscuits. It’s worth the line, trust us.
(3321 20th St // Mission)
Also competing for SF’s biscuit sandwich crown is Kahnfections, a cute little Mission bakery with customizable breakfast sandwich options. Pair a buttermilk, cheddar bacon, or dill swiss biscuit with your choice of toppings, and then relish the foil-wrapped goodness that comes your way.

(Mission // Dogpatch)
You can’t go wrong with any of the breakfast sandwiches on Bandit’s menu, all served on warm brioche buns. We recommend treating yourself with The Fancy (mushrooms, Gruyere cheese, chives, spinach, tomatoes) or getting spicy with The Brekkie (smashed tater tots, jalapeno relish, caramelized onions).
(1002 Potrero Ave // Mission)
Newkirk’s is the closest thing to a NY-style sandwich you can get in SF. Their BEC (or E & C for our vegetarian friends!) is simple, classic, and oh-so-delicious. If you want something heartier, you can also go for their hashbrown sandwich or the Horse on the Roof, which includes grilled ribeye steak.
Via Breadbelly
(Richmond // Dogpatch)
Fermented chili paste on a breakfast sandwich? Yes, please! Breadbelly’s breakfast sandwich also comes with a fried egg, sweet and sour kale, and smoked ham. While you’re visiting, try some of the other pastries at this Asian-American spot: they’re beautifully made, and they taste just as good as they look.
(Mission // Bayview // Mountain View)
OK, this one’s kind of a muffin, but it’s also not not a sandwich. Their signature dish The Rebel Within is a delicious magic trick: slice into the cheesy, scallion-studded pastry and you’ll find an oozing soft-boiled egg inside.
East Bay
Via Grand Lake Kitchen
(2042 MacArthur Blvd // Oakland)
This place has a huge, flavorful menu full of good food. Make sure you get their Breakfast Sando for a serving of country ham, two fried eggs, avocado, jack cheese, and piquillo aioli on an Acme bun. Delicious!
(422 29th Ave // Oakland)
Here, the coffee is strong and the sandwiches are delish. Build your own or opt for one of their premade options, like the Brian Special (spinach, bacon, swiss cheese, avocado) or the Salmon Scramble with (you guessed it) salmon and eggs.
Via Standard Fare
(2701 8th St #118 // Berkeley)
Despite what the name suggests, the exceptional food here — including their buttermilk biscuit sandwich — is anything but “standard.” The sammy comes with vegetables and greens on it, so it’s basically health food. Trust us.
(1954 University Ave // Berkeley)
Vegan folks, we’d never forget about you! This spot is all vegan, all the time. Choose from a variety of items, but don't miss their #thisismyaddiction sandwich. It has a tofu scramble, mozzarella, bacon, and smashed avocado on a soft garlic bread kaiser roll. Best of all, it's entirely plant-based!
South Bay + Peninsula
Via Lou's Cafe
(San Carlos // San Francisco)
With outposts on the Peninsula and across SF, Lou’s is a true Bay Area institution. While their gourmet lunch sandwiches are heavenly, their breakfast sammies also shine. From chicken apple sausage to corned beef hash to jalapenos and sour cream, they’ve got an option for everyone.
(295 E Middlefield Rd // Mountain View)
This beloved local spot is no-frills, all-flavor. Order their Ultimate Combo breakfast sandwich and enjoy heaps of avocado, eggs, cheese, and meat piled onto a bagel, croissant, or toast. You won’t need another meal until dinner!
Via Egghead Sando Cafe
(519 W Capitol Expy // San Jose)
It’s all in the name, folks. They’ve got sandos on sandos on sandos, including a classic BEC, a filling breakfast burger, and a Hawaiian-inspired sandwich with Spam, arugula, and egg. Even the pickiest sandwich enthusiasts can find something to enjoy here.
(855 El Camino Real #104 // Palo Alto)
Inspired by a traditional French cafe, their sandwich is served on — what else? — a croissant, filled with ham and egg. While you’re there, we’d also recommend digging into a tartine or a pastry.
North Bay
Via Model Bakery
(Napa // St. Helena // Yountville // Walnut Creek)
Oprah deemed this bakery’s English muffins one of her “favorite things,” so you know their breakfast sando game is on point. While the muffins are delish on their own, they’re even better when stacked with eggs, cheese, and Canadian bacon.
(173 N McDowell Blvd // Petaluma)
If you’re looking for a thick sandwich, Eggspresso is the right place for you. Their menu pairs eggs with options like corned beef brisket, hickory-smoked ham, tomato & mozzarella, housemade aiolis, and more. Run, don’t walk.
(Santa Rosa // Sebastopol // Valley Ford)
The scenic drive to this cute roadside cafe is a pleasure in and of itself, but luckily, their food is great, too. Their classic sammy — eggs, cheese, spinach, red onion, and mayo — is a delight, along with a coffee or their “brunch booze.”
(221 Shoreline Hwy // Mill Valley)
This trendy Mill Valley spot keeps it simple (and yummy) with its bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. We also love their creative scrambles and breakfast burritos!
