Bay Area Free Museum Days in 2019


What's not to love about museums? You learn new things. You see interesting art. You can use them as a neutral location to figure out whether or not your Tinder date is a total creep. But getting in the door can get pricey, which is why free days are a total blessing. We put them all in one place just for you.



San Francisco



California Academy of Sciences // 55 Music Concourse Dr.

San Francisco residents can visit for free on two Neighborhood Free Weekends each year. Find the designated neighborhoods and coinciding dates here.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts // 701 Mission St.

Free on the first Tuesday of the month. The Third Street Courtyard is always free and open to the public.

SFMOMA // 151 3rd St.

Free family days -- two free adult tickets per person under 18 in your party -- are announced periodically throughout the year. Find the dates here.

de Young // 500 Haigwara Tea Garden Dr.

General admission is free on the first Tuesday of the month. Get $2 off general admission on paid days with proof of purchase from any Bay Area transit system. Every Saturday starting April 6, 2019, the de Young will offer free general admission to SF residents (more info here). The observation tower is always free and open to the public during museum hours.

Free on the first Tuesday of the month.

Museum of Craft and Design // 2569 3rd St.

Free on the first Tuesday of the month.


Asian Art Museum // 200 Larkin St.

Free on the first Sunday of the month.

Contemporary Jewish Museum // 100 34th Ave.

Free on the first Tuesday of the month.

The Exploratorium // Pier 15

Free on community days: February 2, March 14, May 12, September 21 and October 20. More info on community days here.



East Bay




Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive // 2155 Center St.

Free on the first Thursday of the month.

Oakland Museum of California // 1000 Oak St.

Free on the first Sunday of the month. The Museum's plaza and gardens are always open to the public. Admission is half-off on Friday starting at 5 pm.

Chabot Space & Science Center // 10000 Skyline Blvd., Oakland

No recurring free days, but admission is discounted to $5 after 6 pm on the first Friday of the month.

Casa Peralta // 384 W. Estudillo Ave., San Leandro

Admission to San Leandro's historic house museum is free every weekend from 11 am to 3 pm.



South Bay




San Jose Museum of Art // 110 S. Market St., San Jose

Free on El Día de los Muertos, Lunar New Year (February 16), Maker Day (June), and National Museum Day (May 18). Find more info on community days here.

San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles // 520 S. 1st St., San Jose

Pay what you can from 11 am to 4pm, and free from 7 pm to 10 pm on the first Friday of each month, except January and July.

NASA Ames Research Center // Moffett Field

The visitor center of NASA's Bay Area research center is always free.

South Bay Historical Railroad Society // 1005 Railroad Ave., Santa Clara

The railroad heritage museum is always free.



North Bay




Bay Area Discovery Museum // 557 McReynolds Rd., Sausalito

Free on the first Wednesday of the month.

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum // 1490 Library Ln., St. Helena

Admission is always free.
